Ghana's coastline is dotted with colonial era castles, initially built to control gold and other commodity trading operations but then transformed into hubs of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Cape Coast's castle alone saw more than 1 million slaves pass through the door of no return onto the slave ships anchored just offshore. The majority of them died. It made for a slightly chilling visit.

WOW!! Hey Wendy, it's Emily Brelsford (Namey now) - Cathilee Sharretts just shared your blog with me and I'm so JEALOUS!!! What an adventure! I used to work a lot in Anglophone West Africa, so I love seeing these pictures. Your pictures of the Mamas at the clinics are heart-breaking - and all too familiar. I haven't had a chance to get to the beginning to figure out the itinerary or length of your trip, but I will enjoy checking in on your travels from here on out!
Very best,
Emily
